Frequently Asked Questions

Q What happens during an Oriental dance show?
A During a standard 25-30 minute show, the dancer will enter to a fast and exciting piece of music where she will greet the audience and create attention for the show. She will dance to a selection highlighting the use of a prop (sword, finger cymbals, veil, candles, etc) followed by an upbeat, high energy drum solo. After this, Arabic pop will play and audience participation will begin. The goal is to have everyone dancing by the end of the show!

Q Is a belly dance performance appropriate for children?
A Of course! The show is family-friendly and children often love to get up and dance too!

Q What type of sound system do I need to provide?
A The dancer will bring a CD with the performance music to be played on the venue's sound system. If an Arabic band is available, the dancer can perform to live music.

Q The performance is a surprise. What should I do when the dancer arrives?
A For surprise performances it is best to have a separate area for the dancer to wait until time for her to appear. It is recommended to allow the dancer to view the space in which she is performing prior to the performance date for safety reasons.

Q Is tipping appropriate?
A Yes. Tipping is traditional in Arabic society. Tips may be thrown over the dancer's head like a "money shower," placed in a tip jar or basket if provided, or handed to the performer after the show. To maintain the elegance and integrity of the performer and the dance no tips are accepted in the costume.

Q How far in advance should I make the booking?
A Booking in advance is always recommended. Short notice booking is sometimes possible but please give as much notice as possible to allow the dancer time to prepare a show just for you and your guests.

Q What kind of costume will the dancer wear?
A Costumes range from traditional floor length dresses decorated with sequins and embroidery that cover the belly to more modern two piece sequined and beaded bedlah sets with full flowing skirts and scarves. If you have a special costume request please discuss this with the dancer before booking.

Q Is the dancer certified?
A Your belly dancer will probably not be certified. There are many many styles of belly dance and the art is not unifed. There are only a few certifications accepted by the belly dance community. Carolena Nericcio director of FatChance Belly Dance and creator of American Tribal Style and Suhaila Salimpour are two of the most popular and well-respected certifications offered. Most studios in the Middle East do not give certifications for dance although the student may receive a formal receipt or certificate of attendance. There are certification programs that are merit based. Meaning the dancer paid for the certification without attending any classes. If your dancer claims to be certified be sure to ask by who and to see the certification. All legitimate belly dance certifications are attendance based and require 15-30 hours of instruction.

Q What else do I need to know?
A Shop around for a dancer just like you would any other service. Not all dancers are well trained or continue their training. You want a dancer that does. All the dancers at International Gypsy attend live workshops and weekend intensives through the year. Interview your dancer. Watch your dancer in a public venue before you hire her or ask for a short demonstration of her dance.
